Essentially Upbraided

Another pair of finished socks! And I've fallen in love with Ann Budd's 'Better socks from the toe up' pattern in the summer 07 interweave knits. As soon as these came off the needles, I cast on two more pairs.

I apologize for the somewhat unclear pictures. My photographer's only around after 8 pm, so natural light is out of the question.

Essential superwash from knit picks in ash. Size 2 needles (again, knit picks - I'm an addict to their stuff). Pattern was, as mentioned, Ann Budd's toe-up socks from IK 07, plus some cabling that I added on my own. I love the way the braid travels upward, because of the toe up construction.

FO: Bathroom Bag

It might not be the most glamorous or complex project but, on a scale of usefulness, it's way up there:
There was no pattern. I just did purse stitch on my biggest circular needles until it was big enough to hold all the bathroom toys scattered across the floor. Five feet of I-cord for the strap and my bathroom is 10x tidier. Yarn is Knit Picks Shine Worsted in Sea Spray. Toys courtesy of Target and Grandma.

More exciting things to come!

I have discovered a new verb (and, no, it's not Kinnearing, though I do enjoy that one, as well). Retconning. I was reading a wikipedia article (I won't tell you which one, because you'll laugh and it would definitely be of the laughing at me variety) and stumbled across it. It represents all that I love and hate about sci fi and TV. I love continuity. I love when the writers toss out a bone to loyal fans who have been watching forever, like the early reference to Vaughn's dad's watch in Alias (end of Season 3... I'll find a link). I like that writer's realize you can have fans who pay attention, care and remember crap like that. Then I hate that they think they can just change it all, so it looks like continuity, but isn't what went before (like Amidala dying in childbirth at the end of the travesties, though Leia says she can remember her mother during Return of the Jedi).

Just a minor rant!

Oh, and I have new sock yarn coming in the mail. See, there's some knitterly content.

P.S. For those of you who haven't read the He-Man article on wikipedia, retconning refers to retroactive continuity.

P.P.S. What? He was cool when I was 6.

Excuses and a bird's nest

My resolution to get more knitting done happened to coincide with having no time to knit. Between watching the kids, massively editing the last chapter of my thesis, my mom visiting from Alaska. restarting my workout regime and entirely repainting my kitchen cabinets in preparation for selling my condo, life seems pretty full. I get in a few stitches here and there, but nothing that can be called progress. I haven't even had a chance to cast on that green and brown yarn from a few posts ago.

So, instead, I have something else green and brown to show you. A bird's nest that I discovered on my deck! That I hadn't seen it before will give you an idea of how little time we've had to relax out there because of my thesis. But, as it's the only outside place that we have to paint, I was tidying it up the other day and found this...
